I love Canada. Every time we visit I am reminded that I love it there. As the U.S. Presidential race got started some 18 months ago, I joked that I wanted to be Canadian because I'm a sane person who can't for the life of me understand the chaos that is going on this side of the 49th parallel. We live close to the border so we head over to visit our neighboring land to the north often. It's fantastic! No cell service. NICE people. I mean really, there are such nice people and there are so few people compared to the U.S. Best of all, the scenery is insanely beautiful.
It was a three day holiday weekend and our 4th anniversary so we drove for 10 hours to see what we hadn't seen, the Canadian Rockies. We hit Canadian HWY 1 around 3pm and things just got better from there. The further east we drove the mountains started pushing themselves up around us. The light was perfect and it highlighted every single layer of rock. Thousands of years were recorded in the rocks and you could see it all from the car windows. I was elated. I mean really. I love rocks, I love mountains, I love beautiful light and I love road trips!
So I cried. I was so moved by how beautiful everything was. I just sat in the passenger seat ugly crying tears of joy because the mountains were so beautiful. Every direction was different. To the left was a jagged scalloped marble mountain and to the right the earth had just thrusted itself up and created huge shelves overlooking the small railroad towns below. In front of us and behind us the rain was pouring down in narrow spouts.
We camped, hiked, met some elk, stayed away from bears, walked in the rain and vowed to go back again soon. It was perfect and more than I could have ever imagined.
